A Science Fiction Musical Romance

Philadelphia, PA--- “Katie And Pitark,” a science fiction romantic musical in one act, will be presented by Quinn Compositions, a unique company that specializes in writing music and musicals for commission. Both the book and the music of Katie and Pitark were written by Kate Quinn, executive director of Quinn Compositions. Katie and Pitark is a spinoff of Planet Discord, a science fantasy musical Kate Quinn wrote and presented at last year’s Philly Fringe Festival, at the Painted Bride Art Center. This year’s production of Katie and Pitark will be a World Premiere at The Rotunda by Quinn Compositions. Quinn’s unique way of combining science fiction and musical theatre should be fascinating to audiences looking for something a little different from the usual fare.

The story of Katie and Pitark centers around Katie, a sweet natured but rather diffident young woman of twenty-eight. She longs to be more than she is, but isn't sure how to go about it. Enter Pitark, an eccentric artistic personality who shows up singing about how our life stories flow like the river and take us home if we hear its song. Katie is captivated by this strange but charming person, and decides to get to know him a little. However, there is more to him than she could ever dream about. Pitark is out of this world; literally. There is a war on Pitark’s planet and he needs to seek help, and it comes in the form of a special kind of woman from Earth who can bear him a child of their two planets. This child will help Pitark’s people to defeat the enemy, but only if he truly loves Katie and she loves him back. While he hides the truth from Katie because of not wanting to scare her, the two become entangled in a beautiful love that results in the inevitable conception of a child. When Katie tells Pitark she is pregnant, he has to tell her the truth about himself, but can Katie handle it? Only time will tell. As for the music, Quinn, if asked to describe it, would say it was operatic with a mix of Broadway and blues.

The production will take place on September 8th and 15th, at 7pm both nights, at the Rotunda, 4014 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA.(www.therotunda.org) Admission is $10.00 and reservations can be made by calling 215-951-9989 or by visiting the Philly Fringe website. If reserved through Kate Quinn, proceeds will be donated to the Fox Chase Cancer Society.

Featured in the two-person cast are Kate Quinn as Katie, and John Rudolph as Pitark. Stage Direction is by Richard Quinn, and musical direction is by keyboardist Carla Mariani.
