Lula is a ten year old girl whose imagination constantly gets her into trouble. She is always caught up in her fantasies, whether in school or at home. Her world consists of both good and bad elements. One element is Starxene, a world of cat and dog-like people, where everyone is happy and no one argues. On the other hand, there is Planet Discord, a faraway world where an evil King and Queen of a race called Ooblies, rule. The King and Queen want to steal Lula's secret magic power and use it to conquer Planet Earth. Little does anyone but Lula know, this King and Queen are in disguise on Planet Earth, working their magic in order to separate Lula from the one person who ever understood her: her mother, Katie.
Katie is very understanding and patient with Lula, but also very worried about her. Because Lula seems to have no concept of reality, Katie is currently in court battling with her ex husband Paul, Lula's old stepfather(and to her, the Ooblie King from Planet Discord). Paul vows to take the child to a psychiatrist in order to get her some help. Katie refuses to take her to a psychiatrist, as she does not believe Lula is mentally ill. Meanwhile, Lula is being bullied by her fifth grade teacher(whom she calls the Ooblie Queen), and visited by her long lost father at night, who comes to her "in his spirit." Lula sees her father as an alien from Planet Discord who was captured and imprisoned by the King and Queen.
But what if all of this weren't fantasy? What if it were real? Suddenly, just when all seems lost for Katie and Lula, her world comes to life right before Katie's eyes, taking her on an excursion far beyond imagination...far beyond anything she ever knew.
